The Himachal Pradesh government is dedicated to providing citizens with advanced, high-quality healthcare services.

To fulfill this commitment, several state-of-the-art medical institutions have been established across the state, including Indira Gandhi Government Medical College (Shimla), Dr Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College (Tanda, Kangra), Dr Yashwant Singh Parmar Government Medical College (Nahan), Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Government Medical College (Ner Chowk, Mandi), Dr Radhakrishnan Government Medical College (Hamirpur), and Pt Jawaharlal Nehru Government Medical College (Chamba). Additionally, specialist doctors are treating patients at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bilaspur.

A major milestone in healthcare advancement is the establishment of the state’s first Neuro Electrophysiology Lab at Dr Yashwant Singh Parmar Government Medical College and Hospital in Nahan. The lab, which treats patients suffering from brain, nerve, and muscle-related disorders, is especially focused on adolescent and adult patients up to the age of 20. Paediatric neurologist Dr Pawan Kumar is leading the efforts in treating patients with neurological disorders at the facility.

Dr Pawan Kumar shared that a modern Video EEG (Electroencephalography) machine, worth Rs70 lakh, had been installed at the Nahan Medical College by the state government. The machine, fully operational since August 2024, allows for advanced diagnosis of brain, nerve, and muscle diseases. The lab is currently conducting five to six EEG tests daily.

By September 2024, the facility had conducted tests on 350 epilepsy patients, diagnosed nerve and muscle disorders in 40 patients, performed BERA tests on 20 patients with hearing impairments, and used VEP tests to assess 20 patients with vision problems. Dr Kumar also noted that the facility admits two to three children daily who suffer from epilepsy, and 20 to 25 patients with neurological issues visit the outpatient department (OPD) daily. Patients from neighboring states such as Uttarakhand, Haryana and Punjab are also seeking treatment at the Nahan Medical College.

Sandeep Kumar, a resident of Jalalabad in Punjab, shared the experience of his two-year-old son, Yanshdeep, who had been suffering from neurological issues since birth, causing tremors in his hands. After unsuccessful treatments at various hospitals, they learned about the neuro treatment facilities at Nahan Medical College and began Yanshdeep’’s treatment there six months ago. Kumar reports that his son has shown over 50% improvement and expressed his gratitude to the state government and the medical college for providing such excellent healthcare services.

This advanced neuro facility is a significant step forward in improving healthcare services in the state, reflecting the government’’s commitment to providing modern and effective treatment for patients with neurological disorders.
