Himachal-cadre officer K Sanjay Murthy sworn in as Comptroller and Auditor General

Succeeds Girish Chandra Murmu, whose tenure ended on November 20

Former Higher Education Secretary K Sanjay Murthy was sworn in as the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India by President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday.

Murthy, a 1989 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Himachal Pradesh cadre, succeeds Girish Chandra Murmu.

At a ceremony held in the Ganatantra Mandap of Rashtrapati Bhavan this morning, President Droupadi Murmu administered Sanjay Murthy the oath as the Comptroller and Auditor General of India. Murthy will be India's 30th CAG, an institution with pre Independence roots. The first CAG was Edmund Drummond from 1860 to 1862.

He made and subscribed to the oath of office before the President, the President’s office said in a statement.

Murthy was posted as Secretary, Department of Higher Education and his tenure was to end on December 31, 2024. The tenure of Murmu, who assumed office as CAG on August 8, 2020, ended on November 20.

Murthy has a degree in engineering and has worked in Himachal Pradesh for 13 years. He has served as Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation MD and was primary education, higher education and technical education secretary in Himachal from 2011 to 2013.

From 2013 to 2014, he was principal secretary, transport and urban development. In 2014, he came to the Centre as joint secretary in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

Before joining as Secretary Higher Education, he headed NBCC (India) Limited, formerly known as National Buildings Construction Corporation, a public sector undertaking (PSU) company under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
