Heavy rain causes traffic jams in Delhi, key routes affected

Commuters in Delhi experienced significant traffic disruptions due to waterlogging and uprooted trees following heavy rainfall on Monday.
The Delhi Police advised travellers to plan their peak-hour journeys carefully as several key routes were affected. Traffic was severely impacted on National Highway-48 between Dhaula Kuan and Mahipalpur, as well as on the Ring Road from Delhi Noida Direct flyway to the Moolchand underpass.
Other affected areas included Press Enclave Road in Saket, Outer Ring Road and several routes in South Delhi such as Safdarjung to Dhaula Kuan and Badarpur to Mehrauli. Vehicles were moving slowly near Safdarjung and along the Dhaula Kuan to Mahipalpur stretch, while massive traffic jams were reported at Mahipalpur on the route from Gurugram to Central Delhi.
Social media was abuzz with complaints about waterlogging in areas like Khanpur, Moti Bagh and Chhattarpur. The Outer Ring Road was also affected, with traffic disruptions reported in both directions from Savitri Flyover towards Paras Chowk and vice versa. The Traffic Police urged commuters to plan their journeys accordingly.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted light to moderate rain. The maximum temperature was recorded at 33.6°C, while the minimum was 26.2°C. The IMD has forecast pleasant weather with more rainfall expected in the coming days.
Delhi has recorded 882.1 mm of rainfall so far this year, with 837.4 mm occurring during the monsoon months of June, July and August. The IMD has predicted above-normal rainfall in northwest India for September, with the city expected to surpass 1,000 mm of annual rainfall. The long-period average rainfall for September in Delhi is 123.4 mm.
