Upset with the state authorities over the shortage of fertilisers, Congress MP from Hisar Jai Prakash said that he would raise the issue of harassment of farmers on account of unavailability of di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) and other fertilisers in the Lok Sabha in the next session of Parliament.

Interacting with mediapersons after chairing the meeting of the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) in Hisar on Thursday at the mini secretariat here today, the Hisar MP said that it was unfortunate that despite a scampering among farmers on account of shortage of fertilisers in the state during the sowing of rabi crops, the Agriculture Minister kept on claiming that fertilisers were available in sufficient amount.

“This was a blatant lie by the Agriculture Minister. The state government was making misleading statements about the availability of DAP. It shows the lack of concern of the BJP government for farmers,” he said.

The meeting was also attended by three Congress MLAs, including Adampur MLA Chander Prakash, Uklana MLA Naresh Selwal and Narnaund MLA Jassi Petwar. BJP MLAs, including Ranbir Gangwa from Barwala, Randhir Panihar from Nalwa and Vinod Bhayana from Hansi, besides the Independent MLA from Hisar Savitri Jindal stayed away from the meeting.

When the Congress MP asked the district officials about the status of availability of DAP in Hisar, the officials told him that Hisar district has submitted requisition of 25,000 MT of DAP for the rabi sowing season. Of that, 15,000 MT has been supplied to the district till now. Hisar district has 5.5 lakh acres of cultivable area for rabi sowing.

Jai Prakash said that with the peak sowing season of rabi crops of wheat and mustard already over, it would serve little purpose for the farmers if DAP is made available to them now.

“I will take up the shortage of DAP for the farmers in Haryana in the Lok Sabha. This is a serious matter which requires the attention of the whole country as Haryana has been one of the major states which provides grain to the national food kitty,” he said.

The MP also rapped the state government on the issue of BPL population in Haryana stating that it was unfortunate that about 70 per cent of the total population in Haryana has been bracketed in BPL category which shows the financial status of the people.

“The BJP government is busy promoting capitalism and is benefitting industrialists. The state where 70 per cent of the population is poor will not become a developing state, let alone a developed one,” he remarked.
