Undertrial among 2 killed in encounter near Fatehabad

Two alleged criminals were killed in an encounter after police personnel accompanying one of the undertrials opened fire to thwart the attempt to free him from custody near Fatehabad district today. A cop was injured in the exchange of fire.

The police had taken the undertrial to a Fatehabad court in connection with a case. The incident took place around 1.45 pm when the police team bringing back the accused — identified as Ravi (36) — halted the vehicle 7 km from Fatehabad to answer the call of nature.

According to the police, four motorcycle-borne youths opened fire in a bid to free the accused sitting inside the vehicle. The police retaliated, resulting in the death of one of the attackers identified as Ankit of Sanghi village in Rohtak district.

Ravi, the undertrial, succumbed to his injuries in hospital. Hailing from Jagsi village of Sonepat district, Ravi was wanted in 28 cases of murder, attempt to murder, robbery, dacoity, kidnapping and the Arms Act registered in Delhi and five districts of Sonepat, Rohtak, Jind, Fatehabad and Jhajjar districts. He was lodged at Neemka jail and had been taken for production at the court in Fatehabad in connection with a case registered there.

The other accused killed in police action was wanted in 14 cases of murder, attempt to murder, robbery, kidnapping and the Arms Act.

ASI Anil and Head Constable Deepak escaped unhurt. Saurabh Singh, Commissioner of Police, Faridabad, has appreciated the role of the police, describing it as an act of courage.
