Street food hub in the offing for Karnal city residents
In an effort to provide hygienic and delicious street food to residents, the Karnal Municipal Corporation (KMC) is going to set up a street food hub at Ramlila Ground of the city. The tender process for the project has been completed and the work order is expected to be issued by mid-November. The tender process, which began in March, was delayed due to the enforcement of the model code of conduct for the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.
Following the example of food hubs in metropolitan cities, the KMC has initiated this project to offer residents a wide variety of high-quality food options on one central location. “After a technical review of the tender, the work order will be issued to the selected agency by mid-November,” said Niraj Kadiyan.
Kadiyan expressed hope that the project would be completed within six months. The street food hub will include approximately 50 vending structures, with the entire project estimated to cost Rs 95 lakh. "The hub aims to be a one-stop destination where families can enjoy clean, flavourful street food," he said.
The Commissioner said that the hub would feature several amenities for visitors. "Comfortable seating arrangements, water coolers, toilets for men and women, proper lighting and ample parking space will be provided to ensure a pleasant experience for the public," he said.
He said that the hub was being developed on the directives of the Government of India. The Indian Food Safety and Standards Authority (FSSAI) will check food quality at the hub, ensuring that the vendors comply with hygiene and safety standards. FSSAI will also provide training to all vendors and conduct regular inspections to monitor food quality, he added.
Ramlila Ground has been chosen as the location for the hub to ensure that a maximum number of citizens could benefit from the initiative. "The purpose of the hub is to centralise street food vendors," he added. He claimed that this would streamline the operations of street food vendors in one location, ensuring strict adherence to food safety standards," he said.
