The body of a six-year-old girl was found in a sugarcane field at a village falling under the Chhachhrauli police station in Yamunanagar district.

The victim had gone missing on Friday evening while playing outside her house. Locals suspect that the girl was killed by a fellow villager after sexually assaulting her.

Ganga Ram Punia, Superintendent of Police, Yamunanagar, told The Tribune that after getting information about a girl having gone missing late on Friday, a search was launched. The body of the girl was found lying in a sugarcane field a few hours later, he said.

Punia said prima facie, it seemed that the girl was murdered. Whether she was sexually abused or not would be known after a post-mortem examination, he said, adding a suspect had been identified and raids were on to nab him.

This is the second such case in the district in the past three days. Earlier, a seven-year-old girl was allegedly raped and murdered by her neighbour in Buria town. Her body was found lying in a mango orchard on the outskirts of the town on September 19. A suspect, identified as Naresh, was arrested.
