Six districts of Hisar police range have 6,500 drug addicts: Survey
A survey conducted by the Hisar Range police has revealed that there are about 6,500 drug addicts in 512 villages in six police districts of the police range comprising Hisar, Sirsa, Fatehabad, Jind, Hansi and Dabwali.
Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Dr M Ravi Kiran said this in a programme organised in Bheria village of the district which was declared a drug-free village after sustained efforts by the police and local residents.
Addressing the gathering, the ADGP informed that the police teams have conducted a survey in 512 villages of Hisar range. During the survey, the teams identified 6,500 persons who are in the grip of drug addiction, he said. Out of the identified drug addicts, 3,400 drug addicts are under treatment. A total of 5,000 (including 3,400) have been undergoing counselling sessions.
The ADGP said that till now, 300 villages of Hisar division have been declared drug-free. “About 750 youths have given up addiction while some of them have reduced the intake of drugs and are getting treatment to get rid of addiction,” he said, adding that police teams have been formed in all the six districts of the range.
“These teams identify drug addicts by conducting door-to-door surveys in drug-affected villages. Counselling of the victims is done and they are being encouraged to undergo treatment to get rid of addiction,” he stated.
The Police Department declares a village drug-free if it shows 80 per cent improvement in the drug situation or has no person in the net of drugs or has nil drug trafficking zone.
In Hisar police district, 28 villages have been declared drug-free which include Gawar, Basda, Gorchi, Bheria, Panihar Chakk, Sarsana, Payal, Charnaund, Dahima, Gunjar, Dubeta, Bure, Badya Brahmayan, Badya Jatan, Harita, Burre, Dhayan, Singharan, Shikarpur, Raipur, Dhani Raipur, Khokha, Kharkadi, Mallapur, Ghursal, Mirkan, Bhojraj and Dhiranwas from Hisar district. These were honoured in the event.
In an earlier drive, 28 other villages were declared drug-free which took the total number of drug-free villages in Hisar district to 56, the police spokesperson said.
