Sirsa growers learn eco-friendly way of managing paddy straw
In a bid to promote sustainable farming practices, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) organised a special demonstration on stubble management in Farwai Khurd village. The event, held on Tuesday, showcased how farmers could use the innovative Pusa Decomposer to convert crop stubble into compost instead of burning it, which harms the environment.
Led by ICAR’s Principal Scientist Livleen Shukla, Scientist Satish and Biocals’ marketing director Rajesh Sachdeva, the team demonstrated the decomposer process in farmer Rajendra Kumar’s field. Shukla explained that instead of burning stubble, farmers could use the decomposer, which was of advanced technology, from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI). This decomposer not only helps in managing stubble but also improves soil fertility by turning it into organic compost.
Originally available in capsule form, the Pusa Decomposer took up to 30 days to convert stubble into compost. Now, it’s available in a powdered form, which farmers can simply mix with water and spray directly on the stubble, decomposing it within 15 days. The decomposer is also useful for kitchen waste management, offering farmers a way to create organic compost from household waste as well.
Marketing Director Rajesh Sachdeva encouraged farmers to adopt this environment-friendly technology, highlighting its role in enhancing soil health. He also urged the government to provide the Pusa Decomposer for free to support farmers in adopting eco-friendly practices.
Additional Director Anil Wadhwa and other Biocals’ team members were present to educate farmers on the benefits of this technology, emphasising that it was an all-round solution for waste management and soil enrichment.
