Industrial sectors of Faridabad have been plagued by improper discharge of sewage in the open for long. According to sources, the majority of sewage and civic waste of 1,500 odd industrial units located in Sector 58 is being released in the open due to lack of inefficient sewer network and poor upkeep of the sewerage.
Several acres of the land in the Sectors of 58 and 59, developed by the Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP), have turned into a dumping ground, where untreated industrial and chemical nature waste is discharged. This poses a constant threat of the contamination of the groundwater in the region. In addition, the accumulated untreated waste produces unbearable stench.
Despite the problem having been brought to the notice of the authorities concerned multiple times, no change has taken place on the ground, said an industrialist. The HSVP had carved out the sector in 2000 and allotted the plots for the setting up of the manufacturing units, but the sector did not get the basic infrastructure required for ensuring proper disposal of the civic waste, he added.
“The problem of inefficient sewer network and drainage has been persistent for more than a decade,” says Suresh Chand Garg, president of the Industrial Welfare Association (IWA). He said around 15-20 acres of land that was earmarked for developing a shopping complex had become a hotspot for waste dumping.
With a similar situation prevailing in Sector 59, the absence of a proper outlet for discharging sewage has led to insanitary civic conditions in the area. “The industrial and chemical effluents, which need to be released into the drains connected with a sewage treatment plant, are being discharged in the open,” says Ramneek Prabhakar, another industrialist.
HSVP Executive Engineer Ajit Singh said the complaints were being attended till the sector was transferred to the Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (HSIIDC) a few months ago.
HSIIDC Manager Hari Kishan said the matter had been taken up with the Municipal Corporation of Faridabad to ensure the proper connectivity of sewer lines so that the sector’s waste was discharged into the main line.
