Rohtak, August 19

After the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, the Resident Doctors Association (RDA) of the PGIMS and the PGIDS, Rohtak, has demanded from the authorities that it should take steps for the safety of doctors and medical students on the PGIMS campus.

“We have submitted a memorandum to the Director, PGIMS, raising several justified demands to ensure the safety and security of the doctors and students on the PGIMS campus. The gate of the labour room should be closed from the side of the Doctors’ Hostel and entry made from somewhere else so as to check unauthorised parking of vehicles there, which is not appropriate from the safety point of view in the hostel area,” said Dr Prajawal, president, RDA.

He said a common road leading towards Srinagar Colony and passing outside the Boys Hostel should be closed so that the hostel area can be separated from other areas. There was no boundary wall at many places of the campus so the entire campus should be covered with it, he said.

“The CCTV cameras have not been installed at many places on the campus hence we are demanding that these with a night vision be installed everywhere on the campus, especially in the areas of movement of resident doctors and students. Due to the entry of anti-social elements on the campus, women doctors and students become subject to indecent comments. Strict barricading and checking of vehicles should be done at the main entrance of the campus to prevent such acts,” he added.

Dr Prajwal said an institutional FIR should be registered within six hours as per the instructions of the Ministry of Health in case of violence against any doctor during duty hours. A permanent security checkpost should also be set up on the way from the library to the Girls Hostel. All such zones and routes of the campus on which there was movement of doctors and students should be provided with better lights and security personnel should also be deployed, he added.

“A quick response team of the PGIMS security should be formed and a helpline number should also be issued. Two security personnel should be deployed during each shift in each ward of the hospital and unnecessary entry of patients’ relatives in the wards should be stopped. Additional security personnel should be recruited for the PGIMS security on a priority basis and they should be trained regularly,” the RDA president added.

‘Safety our priority’

Dr Shamsher Singh Lohchab, Director, Rohtak PGIMS, said safety of doctors, students and all employees was our priority hence necessary security measures were being adopted. “Appropriate action is also being taken on the demands submitted by the resident doctors,” he added.
