Chandigarh, July 25

The Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa today urged President Droupadi Murmu to reject the Haryana Government’s recommendations to award gallantry medals to six cops for stopping the farmers from marching towards Delhi at the Shambhu border in February.

Bajwa said the awards had been proposed for the police officers who stand accused of ordering unprovoked and indiscriminate firing upon peaceful farmers at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders.

“It is akin to awarding a gallantry medal to General Dyer for his role in the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. Such an act by the state government is troubling. By endorsing these awards, the Haryana Government appears to provide a clean chit to the police officers who are currently under judicial inquiry for their excessive use of force against peaceful demonstrators,” said the LoP.

He added that the role of these police officers remains under scrutiny through a special committee constituted by the HC. Yesterday, the Ministry of Home Affairs had sought the details of ‘firing’ by two IPS officers and two HPS officers whose names had been recommended along with that of two others by the Haryana Government.
