Chandigarh, February 28

Former minister and Tosham MLA Kiran Choudhary expressed opposition to the decision to give water from the Yamuna river to Rajasthan today.

She said Rajasthan has always opposed Haryana on the water issue. “Rajasthan built a dam on the river coming to Mahendragarh and did not give its share of water to Haryana. But, the Haryana Government has signed a memorandum of understanding with Rajasthan to provide water from the Yamuna river, which is not in the interest of the people of Haryana.”

Talking to reporters, the MLA said, “When Rajasthan opposes Haryana everywhere, why has a water agreement been signed with them? If water is to be delivered by laying a pipeline, then it should be delivered to the dark zones of Haryana.” She added that she had called attention motion on the issue of providing water to Rajasthan, which was rejected.

She said that water crisis was increasing in southern Haryana — Bhiwani, Mahendragarh, Charkhi-Dadri and Hisar. “No steps are being taken by the government regarding water supply in these areas, whereas an agreement is being made to provide water to Rajasthan. It is an absurd decision to lay a pipeline to supply additional water to Rajasthan. The water flowing away during monsoon should be used to meet the irrigation needs of the people of Haryana,” she said.
