PWD to construct railway overbridge in Sirsa to ease traffic congestion
After the 'bhumi poojan' for Sant Baba Sarsai Nath Medical College was performed by Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, residents of Sirsa had raised concerns about the limited routes leading to the college. Only three routes connect the city to the college, two of which have railway crossings and third one passes through the heavily congested Bhuman Shah Chowk. This is bound to create challenges for both regular and emergency access to the medical college, particularly during peak traffic hours.
In response to these concerns, the Public Works Department (PWD) of Sirsa has now taken a significant step toward improving the situation. Following a detailed report published by The Tribune on November 25, the department has decided to construct a railway overbridge (ROB) at the Chattargarh Patti Bypass railway crossing. This overbridge will help resolve the problem of traffic congestion that had long plagued the area, providing a smoother passage for vehicles travelling from Dabwali Road to Barnala Road and allowing easier access to the medical college, Chaudhary Devi Lal University, police lines, and other key government offices.
The construction of this overbridge is estimated to cost around Rs 20 crore. It will reduce the daily traffic jams caused by the frequent closures of the Chattargarh Patti Bypass railway crossing, where trains and freight trains often block the way, causing significant delays. These traffic jams also lead to accidents, as vehicles rush to get through when the gate opens. The overbridge will eliminate these issues, enabling smoother travel across these key routes.
This project will also benefit residents traveling from various parts of the city to key locations such as the medical college and the university. Traffic flow will improve and people will be able to reach their destinations more easily, reducing travel time and stress.
Sanjay Sabharwal, Executive Engineer, PWD (B&R), said the government and their department were fully committed to building a railway overbridge at this railway gate. The approval for the cost and design, which is estimated to be around Rs 20 crore, has been received from the higher authorities. Now, the detailed notice inviting tenders is being prepared, and the tender notice will be issued soon. He mentioned that the paperwork was expected to be completed quickly and construction would begin soon thereafter.
Additionally, the tender for the railway under-bridge for the railway crossing on the Old Court Road has been allotted. Sources said its construction would start after utility shifting.
