Yamunanagar, July 16

The Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB), Yamunanagar, has issued show-cause notices to 25 industrial units for discharging untreated effluent into sewer lines.

The action was taken after the samples, which were collected by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and sent to IIT-Roorkee for laboratory testing, failed the tests. According to information, HSPCB Regional Officer Virender Singh Punia recently issued notices to these 25 units for their closure.

The notices were issued under Section 33A of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, and Section 31A of Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981.

As per the notices, an environmental compensation might have also been imposed, besides the revocation of the consent to operate (CTO) certificate that was granted to these units under the Air and Water Acts.

These are water and air polluting units in nature and come under the ‘red’ category as per the consent management policy of the HSPCB.

Abhijeet Singh Tanwar, Assistant Environment Engineer, HSPCB, Yamunanagar, said a team deputed by the CPCB visited such units to carry out an inspection of the grossly polluting industry (GPI) units. He said a team of officials from IIT-Roorkee visited those units and collected samples from the outlet of the effluent treatment plants (ETP) of these units.

He said as per the analysis report, several parameters, including the pH, TDS, chloride and nitrate, were found exceeding the prescribed limits.

“You are engaged in disposing of the untreated effluent, hence violating the Section 24 of the Water Act, 1974. No authority/person is authorised to discharge such untreated effluent into any water stream/river/drain or on land,” read a show-cause notice.
