Panipat’s Sumit wins bronze in under-19 World Boxing championship
Indian boxer Sumit from Panipat has won a bronze medal at the U-19 World Boxing Championship held in Colorado, USA. Sumit defeated boxers from Germany and the USA. The championship, being held from October 25 to November 5, saw fierce competition from boxers across various countries.
Sumit (18), who is pursuing BA-II from a college in Daman, had started learning boxing at Shivaji stadium in Panipat under coach Sunil Kumar while he was in Class VII.
“Sumit is playing from Daman and he has played 24 tournaments, including three international ones,” said Inspector Rekha Rani, SHO and Sumit’s mother. His father Mukesh Kumar was also an international-level wrestler and is presently posted at Mumbai airport.
Sumit had won the bronze medal in Asian Youth Boxing Championship held in Kazakhstan in May and a bronze medal in World Boxing Championship held in Montenegro in March. Apart from this, he has also won a bronze medal in the ‘Khelo India’ games held in Chennai in January and was selected for SAI Boxing Academy in Rohtak, his mother said. He has also won two silver medals in the junior national championships held in Bihar in 2022 and Sonepat in 2021.
