With the arrest of nine persons, the Panipat police claimed to have busted a gang allegedly involved in robbing commuters at gunpoint during the night time, from the Chautala road here on Monday night. The police also recovered a car from the possession of the miscreants.
The gang members committed five robbery incidents within the last 15 days.
All gang members are 18 to 20 years old and they committed crimes in a hired vehicle at the night time to earn easy money.
The police produced the accused in the court today and the court sent three accused on two days' police remand while others have been sent to judicial custody.
Satish Vats, DSP, Headquarters, during a press conference held on Tuesday, said that the accused have been identified as Jakir, Sumit, Shubham of Kar Sindhu village in Jind district, Ravi, Vikas, Ankit, Sunny of Kheri Khamvati, Sahil and Himanshu of Safidon in Jind district.
He said that the CIA-2 team incharge Inspector Phool Kuma, along with his team, was on patrolling duty on the NH-44 on Monday night when received a tip-off that some suspects were sitting in a Swift car near Sector 29 turn on Chautala road.
Following the tip-off, the CIA-2 team raided the spot and nabbed all the youths.
During the preliminary investigation, the accused revealed that they had robbed a motorcycle, Rs 3,400 cash and two mobile phones at a knife point from Vikas of Bhaupur on the canal bridge near Brahaman Majra on December 13 by assaulting him.
The accused confessed to having committed four more robbery incidents in the last few days, including robbery of cash and a mobile phone from a person on a motorcycle near the Singhpura railway crossing on the night of December 12. The gang assaulted a youth and robbed a mobile phone, a gold ring, Rs 4,500 cash near the cremation ground of Nara village on December 1, robbed Rs 17,000 and two mobile phones from another youth of Kavi village near Satsang Bhawan in Bhalsi village and the gang also looted Rs 3,500 from a resident of Kavi by assaulting on him on the night of December 13.
During the investigation, it came to the fore that Jakir was the kingpin of the gang and they used to rob people to fulfill buy expensive shoes and clothes and to earn quick money, said the DSP, Headquarters.
It was also revealed that the accused were using only the hired vehicles to save themselves from the police, he added.
DSP Vats said that the accused were produced in court on Tuesday and the court sent Shubham, Ravi, Vikas, Ankit, Sahil and Himanshu to judicial custody and sent the kingpin Jakir, Sumit and Sunny on two days' police remand for further investigation.
