Over 25 hurt as shop caves in at poll meeting in Mathepur village
Over 25 persons were injured after a balcony of a shop-cum-house in Mathepur village of the Hathin subdivision caved in during an election programme of a candidate here on Wednesday night. The injured include the son of the INLD-BSP candidate from Hathin segment in the district. Two to four of the injured are reported to be serious.
According to police sources, the incident took place around 8.45 pm at the village when the INLD BSP candidate Tayyab Hussain Bhimsika was to address an election meeting on the spot.
It was reported that several persons, majority being youths, climbed on the first floor of the house and stood on the balcony of the canopy of a shop in the village which made the structure came down all of a sudden. Panic spread among those who had gathered to attend the meeting.
The incident took place a few minutes ahead of the arrival of the candidate, it is claimed. All the injured have been shifted to various hospitals in the region.
While seven of the injured taken to the primary health centre at Hathin were discharged after first aid, some others have been shifted to the Medical College and Hospital at Nalhar in Nuh district. Atleast five of the injured are minors.
The injured include Asif Husaain(32) son of Tayyab Hussain, who is reported to have got injuries in head. Altaf Hussain Sarpanch of the village said that the incident took place in the local market area of the villages where the meeting was to be held. The identity and exact number of injured is being verified, it is added.
The police which arrived at the spot is reported to have launched a probe into the incident. No complaint has been filed so far in this connection, according to police sources.
