Over 1,700 fined for throwing garbage in open in 4 months
A total of 1,727 persons in Gurugram have been penalised over the past four months for dumping garbage in open spaces and along roadsides, with fines amounting to Rs 9,62,500. This was disclosed by Dr Narhari Singh Banger, Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram, on Tuesday.
He noted that while the MCG’s sanitation teams are working tirelessly to improve the city’s sanitation system, strict action is also being taken against those responsible for littering and dumping solid waste in public areas.
In June, a special campaign was launched to enhance garbage collection and overall sanitation through the implementation of the Solid Waste Environment Exigency Programme (SWEEP) in Gurugram. As part of this campaign, the MCG teams not only focused on improving sanitation, but also began monitoring individuals littering in open spaces, streets, markets and other public places.
In June, fines totalling Rs 2,22,000 were imposed on 439 violators, while July saw 732 violators fined Rs 4,18,500. In August, 413 persons were caught littering, resulting in fines amounting to Rs 2,40,500. So far in September, fines of Rs 81,500 have been levied on 143 offenders.
Dr Banger mentioned that MCG’s sanitation teams were actively encouraging shopkeepers and street vendors in market areas, along main roads, and in public places to use dustbins. Anyone found littering near their shop or vending area is being fined between Rs 500 and Rs 1,000, and they are warned to maintain cleanliness in the future.
