‘One nation, one poll’ not possible under present Constitution: PC
Senior Congress leader and former Finance and Home Minister P Chidambaram today said ‘one nation, one election’ is not possible without Constitutional amendments. “One nation, one election needs at least five Constitutional amendments for which present government doesn’t have a mandate,” he added.
“The BJP government, earlier led by Manohar Lal Khattar and now Nayab Singh Saini, have failed on every front and that is the reason that Haryana today has the worst economic indicators in the country,” he said.
Armed with statistics and data, Chidambaram said, “Haryana is essentially an agriculture state as more than 70 per cent of Haryana’s population earns its livelihood from this sector. Due to the callous attitude of this government, farmers had to resort to agitations and come on the roads.”
“The debt of an average Haryana household was around Rs 79,000 in 2014 which has risen to Rs 1,82,922 five years later. It must have gone even further by now as no data is available about the latest situation,” Chidambaram said.
He further said the ugly truth is that 32 per cent of the agricultural debt is owed to private moneylenders and that proves there is not enough institutional credit extended to farmers in the past 10 years. He said the much-touted Central schemes like PM Kisan Yojana and Fasal Beema Yojana have failed to improve the lot of Haryana farmers.
