Now, Rohtak PGIMS docs to treat patients at urban primary health Centres too

Pt BD Sharma University of Health Sciences (UHS) here in collaboration with the district health authorities have come up with a special plan to treat patients at their nearest government healthcare institute in Rohtak city.

As per the plan, four urban primary health centres (UPHCs) have been singled out in Rohtak city where a team of seven specialist doctors from the PGIMS here will run OPD services there once in a week so that patients of nearby areas do not have to go to the PGIMS for the purpose.

The UHS authorities claim that it is for the first time when the specialist doctors from the PGIMS will extend their services at the UPHCs regularly. These UPHCs are located at Ekta Colony, Hari Singh Colony, Sukhpura Chowk and Gaukaran in Rohtak city.

“Doctors of seven specialties, including medicine, surgery, paediatrics, gynaecology, skin, psychiatry and dental will be deployed at the UPHCs for one day in a week on rotation basis. It will help the patients avoid travel, long queues and wait for their turn to get treatment at the PGIMS where several thousand people come daily to the OPD block,” said Dr HK Aggarwal, Vice-Chancellor, UHS, during an exclusive interaction with ‘The Tribune’.

He said the programme, 'Healthcare at doorstep' would help patients with chronic disease the most. Moreover, the elderly and women with babies who find it difficult to reach the PGIMS would also be benefited. The programme would be launched from January 1, he added.

“The UHS authorities are determined to take all steps which ensure all medical facilities to the patients easily. Some other plans are in the pipeline for the betterment of the patients,” Dr Aggarwal added.

Dr SK Singhal, Director, PGIMS, said they had sufficient number of doctors to perform the task on rotation, hence the process was under way to assign them duty in a planned manner.

Dr Kundan Mittal, Medical Superintendent, PGIMS, said it was a flagship programme of the UHS. “It will be assessed periodically and modified accordingly for expansion,” he added.

“At present, only one doctor is available in every UPHC and more than 50 patients visit daily there to get medical treatment. On execution of the programme, the number of patients is likely to increase considerably as chronic and other patients will be able to get treatment here from the specialists,” said Dr Ramesh Chander, Civil Surgeon, Rohtak.
