After sending 28 habitual drug peddlers to one-year preventive detention, the Haryana State Narcotics Control Bureau (HSNCB) has sought permission from the state government for preventive detention of 47 habitual offenders.

As per officials associated with the HSNCB, these offenders are those who are involved in two or more cases of drug peddling and have not been abiding by the directions of the police to not indulge in such activities.

Arrests, seizures so far

  • In the current year, 258 drug peddlers have been arrested in 164 NDPS commercial cases so far
  • Additionally, 1,316 peddlers have been arrested in 933 medium-level cases, and 622 people apprehended in 556 small-level cases
  • By June 30, 2024, approximately 11.9 kg of heroin, 69.362 kg of charas, 3,440 kg of ganja, 129.938 kg of opium, 6,616 kg of poppy husk, and 1,64,790 narcotic pills/injections have been recovered
  • In 2024, under NDPS commercial cases, 258 drug peddlers were apprehended in 164 cases

Involving youths in sports

These habitual offenders are kept in one-year preventive detention under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PITNDPS) Act. An official said this Act provides detention in cases for the purposes of preventing illicit traffic under the NDPS Act and combating abuse of such drugs and substances.

“To make Haryana drug-free, the Bureau had earlier got approval from the state government for one-year preventive detention against 59 drug peddlers from January 1, 2023 to July 18, 2024. Of them, currently 28 drug peddlers are under detention,” said Satish Vats, Deputy Superintendent of Police, HSNCB (HQ), Madhuban.

“The Haryana Police are not only raising awareness among the general public about the ill-effects of drugs but are also involving youth in sports so that they don’t go towards drugs,” said the DSP. “Through these campaigns, we have reached out to nearly 20 lakh people, appealing them to support in making Haryana a drug-free state,” he said.

He said as part of the anti-drug campaign, the Haryana Police and HSNCB have taken strict measures by registering 1,653 cases and sending 2,196 people involved in these cases to jail.

In 2024, under NDPS commercial cases, 258 drug peddlers were apprehended in 164 cases. Additionally, 1,316 peddlers have been arrested in 933 medium-level cases, and 622 people were arrested in 556 small-level cases. By June 30, 2024, approximately 11.9 kg of heroin, 69.362 kg of charas, 3,440 kg of ganja, 129.938 kg of opium, 6,616 kg of poppy husk, and 1,64,790 narcotic pills/injections have been recovered.

He appealed to the public to report any information related to drug trafficking in their area at toll-free number 9050891508 and said the identity of the informer will be kept confidential.
