MDU sports council to give Rs 80L cash prizes to 429 winning players
As many as 429 students of various colleges and University Teaching Departments (UTDs) would soon get cash prizes amounting to Rs 80 lakh for winning medals in inter-college, inter-university, World University and Khelo India Games.
The Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) Sports Council has approved their cash prizes that pertained to academic session 2022-23 and 2023-24. The university authorities are now planning to organise a function to felicitate all the players. Some more vital decisions were also taken at a meeting of the council held on Tuesday.
“As many as 239 students will be given cash prizes for clinching positions in All India Inter University games in the past two academic sessions. In total, 100 players have secured first position, 130 second and 187 got third positions in various games, while 12 players would be given cash awards for participating in World University Games,” said Prof Rajendra Parsad Garg, Director (Sports), MDU.
Garg maintained that besides the players, 56 coaches and managers would also be given cash prizes as the sports council had also made a provision of giving prizes to coaches and managers of those players who secured positions in various games.
He said the students were being given a cash prize of Rs 31,000 for winning first position in All India Inter University, Rs 25,000 for second and Rs 21,000 for the third position. Besides, Rs 8,000 for getting first position, Rs 6,000 for second and Rs 4,000 for the third position in the North Zone Inter University competitions.
“Similarly, a cash award of Rs 21,000 is given for participation in the World University Games, while Rs 11,000 for securing first position, Rs 8,000 for second and Rs 5,000 for the third position in Khelo India University Games have been fixed,” he added.
Sharing information about other decisions of the sports council, the Director said the cash prizes had also been enhanced for inter-college annual general trophies. Now, overall first position holder college would be given cash prizes of Rs 71,000. Similarly, Rs 51,000 for runner-up college and Rs 31,000 for the third position holder had been fixed. Earlier, the prizes were Rs 51000, Rs 31000 and Rs 21,000 respectively, he added.
“A total estimated budget of Rs 7.18 crore has been passed at the meeting to organise various sorts of sports activities in a year. MDU will now facilitate its players to travel in AC-3 tier rail coaches,” said Garg.
Meanwhile, Vice-Chancellor Prof Rajbir Singh said sports infrastructure would be strengthened in the university and special focus would be on providing international-level facilities to the players. “We will give special encouragement to the players participating in Khelo India and World University Games,” he added.
