A massive rescue operation is underway for a man who fell into a 50-ft-deep well while trying to fix a defective electric motor at Bithmara village of Hisar district.

The NDRF and the administration are trying to locate the missing labourer by way of digging a parallel well to reach the spot.

The incident occurred on the night of October 4, when a farmer, Rajender, roped in some labourers to repair a defective motor in his field. One of the labourers, Ramesh (37), went inside the well to check the motor. However, heaps of sand suddenly caved in and he got stuck inside.

According to information, villagers immediately began a rescue operation and tried to dig up a parallel well. A team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was roped in from Gurugram the next day. The NDRF, too, tried to dig a parallel well to reach the bottom of the well where the worker was stuck. But, it had to abort the operation as more portions of the earth started caving in.

Village sarpanch Kuldeep Dhattarwal said the NDRF, along with the villagers, had been trying to rescue the man stuck inside the well. He said the NDRF team had dug a wide ‘khud’ and had reached near the bottom of the well this evening.

Hailing from Gullarwala village in Fatehabad district, the 37-year-old worker is a father of two children.

Uklana police station SHO Gurminder Singh said that though the rescue team had reached a depth of 50 feet and it also found the cloth that Ramesh had tied on his head, there was no trace of the man. He said it was suspected that the man must have slid down further. Police sources and the people involved in the rescue operation said it was difficult for a person to survive for so long under such circumstances.
