Karnal MC to impose fine on burning garbage
In an attempt to curb pollution in the city and also to maintain cleanliness, the Karnal authorities of the Municipal Corporation (KMC) issued a warning against burning garbage within the city limits. The authorities have announced that violators caught burning waste could face hefty fines ranging from Rs 5,000-Rs 25,000. The authorities emphasised the need for residents to dispose of waste responsibly.
Karnal Municipal Corporation (KMC) Commissioner Dr Vaishali Sharma has constituted teams for inspection and monitoring in all four zones under the sanitation branch.
The team members will monitor their zones and impose fines to those found burning garbage,” said Dr Vaishali
She said anyone found setting fire to garbage, plastic, or polythene will be fined between Rs 5,000 and Rs 25,000 under the National Green Tribunal (NGT) guidelines. The violators who fail to pay the fine will be required to attend a hearing at the NGT Court in Delhi. The corporation has already fined five violators.
This initiative aligns with directives from the Supreme Court, NGT and both Central and State Pollution Control Boards. In addition to the Municipal Corporation’s efforts, a team from the Pollution Control Board will also conduct inspections.
She also appealed to the city residents, private waste collectors, scrap dealers, shopkeepers, and street vendors to refrain from burning waste, plastic or polythene as it not only harms the environment but also leads to health issues that can affect everyone. “Our main goal is to keep the city clean and prevent pollution,” said the Commissioner.
She said there were garbage collection vehicles in the city and people should avail the facility by segregating the waste, which will further be processed at the solid waste management plant
