Despite repeated warnings and incentives being offered by the state government, farmers continue to burn paddy residue in the district.

As per the agriculture department, 71 active fire locations have been reported so far, of which stubble burning was confirmed at 49 locations. An environment compensation charge (ECC) of Rs 1.12 lakh has been imposed on 45 farmers, and 11 red entries have been made in land records of the offenders.

The district administration has also issued notices to gram sachivs, sarpanches, and nambardars of Kirmach, Sarai Sukhi and Bir Sonti villages and police officials of the areas concerned.

Nearly 3 lakh acre is under paddy cultivation in the district, from which about 6 lakh tonne straw is expected to be generated.

The Deputy Director Agriculture, Kurukshetra, Dr Karam Chand, said, “The department has prepared a broad action plan to reduce the farm fires. There is a bumper crop and efforts are being made to keep the fire cases below 100 this year. We have provided 747 machines to farmers on 50% subsidy. We have set up 10 centres for procurement management of residue.”
