Ignored earlier, Yamunanagar district witnessed the arrival of several big leaders in the run-up to the Assembly elections this time.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, his sister Priyanka Gandhi, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath, former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and BSP supremo Mayawati, former Chief Minister of Delhi and AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal, former Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh Jai Ram Thakur, former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, his son Deepender Hooda and several other senior leaders of different political parties came here for campaigning.
On the last day of campaigning on Thursday, Congress leader Deepender Hooda held a public meeting in Bilaspur town in favour of party candidate Akram Khan from Jagadhri Assembly constituency and other party candidate Renu Bala from reserved Sadhaura Assembly constituency.
Kejriwal had kicked off his Assembly election campaign in Haryana from Jagadhri city of Yamunanagar district on September 20, when he took out a massive roadshow in favour of Adarsh Pal Gurjar, who is contesting from the Jagadhri Assembly constituency.
The BJP has fielded sitting MLA Kanwar Pal Gujjar from this seat. Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a rally in Jagadhri on September 23, giving a push to the campaign of party candidates Kanwar Pal Gujjar from Jagadhri, Ghanshyam Dass Arora from Yamunanagar, Balwant Singh from Sadhaura and Shyam Singh Rana from Radaur Assembly constituency.
BSP supremo Mayawati also chose Yamunanagar district for campaigning. She addressed a public meeting held by INLD-BSP alliance candidates Darshan Lal Khera, party candidate from Jagadhri Assembly constituency Dilbag Singh, who is contesting election from the Yamunanagar Assembly constituency, and other party candidates of the district.
Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also addressed a rally in Bilaspur town, falling under Sadhaura Assembly constituency, where Balwant Singh is BJP candidate.
The Vijay Sankalp Yatra, led by Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, passed through Sadhaura Assembly constituency on September 30.
A political observer said that politically, Yamunanagar district had been ignored for a long time, but this district remained the centre of attraction in this Assembly election as many big leaders of different political parties came here for campaigning.
“In the previous Assembly elections, this district was ignored and only a few big leaders used to come here for campaigning. However, it is a good thing that the political parties noticed this district and sent its big leaders for campaigning in this Assembly elections,” said a political observer.
