Karan Singh, one of the two crew members who died after an Indian Coast Guard helicopter crashed into Arabian Sea off Gujarat Coast on Monday, was the native of Davla village in Jhajjar district of Haryana.

A pall of gloom descended in the village as soon as this tragic news reached there on Tuesday evening. Villagers started gathering at Karan’s house to console the bereaved family. Karan’s body will be brought to the village on Thursday morning for cremation.

“My elder brother was talking to our mother on phone when he received a message to go on an emergency operation to evacuate a seriously injured crew member from the Indian-flagged motor tanker which was sailing around 40 km away from the coast of Porbandar. We got the news of Karan’s death in the helicopter crash on Tuesday morning. Thereafter, I rushed to Gujarat,” said Arjun Bharti, younger brother of Karan.

Bharti said he had reached Gujarat and would return to the village on Thursday morning with his brother’s body and other family members. Karan had a daughter (3) and son (1). He had been residing there with his family in an official accommodation.

“Karan had joined the service 13 years ago. His team through the helicopter had recently played a crucial role in rescuing 67 lives during cyclonic weather in Gujarat. He always performed his duty with dedication and honesty,” Bharti added.
