Haryana witnessed 12.6% fall in rape cases: DGP

Haryana has witnessed a fall in the crime against women, officials in the state police said.

Issuing a press statement, Director General of Police (DGP) Shatrujit Kapur said there had been a 12.64 per cent decrease in rape cases in 2024 compared to 2023. He said the police had registered 767 rape-related FIRs till June 30 this year, while they had registered 878 cases in 2023.

Similarly, the state has also witnessed a 60.28 per cent dip in cases related to attempt to rape from 141 in 2023 to 56 in 2024. Besides, there has been a 27.21 per cent decrease in the molestation cases, which dropped from 1,018 in 2023 to 741 this year.

In addition, there has also been a 6.46 per cent dip in cases registered under the POCSO Act. Dowry deaths have also fallen by 25.23 per cent.

A police spokesperson said ever since Shatrujit Kapur took charge as the DGP, he had been prioritising women’s safety. Meetings with senior police officials led to the formulation of an action plan to ensure women that felt safe in Haryana, he added.

“It included analysing women’s movement from home to late-night returns. Police Commissioners and Superintendents were instructed to identify hotspots and hot routes within their jurisdictions. Police teams were deployed on these routes to take action against offenders and those involved in criminal tendencies,” the press statement read.

“The Haryana Police has also introduced a public transport trip-monitoring service for women. The women can register themselves by dialing 112, and their journey will be tracked until they reach their destination safely. Additionally, the Durga Shakti Rapid Action Force, which comprises 24 companies and 50 patrolling vehicles, is linked to #112 to promptly address the complaints related to women’s safety,” said the spokesperson.
