The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram has proposed to buy 40 hydraulic waste compactor machines (dumpers) for the efficient collection of household garbage from various parts of the city.

However, the proposal is lying in the directorate of the urban local bodies department for approval. The enforcement of the model code of conduct of the upcoming Assembly elections has delayed this project.

As per the available details, the total cost of these hydraulic waste compactor machines has been established at Rs 36 crore.

All 35 wards would be allocated one compactor machine each, while the five other machines will be deployed in the extended areas of the civic body.

A decision in this regard was taken in a meeting to review the Solid Waste Environment Exigency Programme (SWEEP) on July 7, this year. The chief secretary, TVSN Prasad, who presided over the meeting, had asked the civic authorities to purchase these compactor machines.

The collection, transportation and management of a huge volume of solid waste in Gurugram city is a major problem. The hydraulic compactors will be able to collect and transport huge quantities of solid waste by compressing it. It will help to reduce the burden on manual collection of door-to-door waste by workers of the private agencies.
