The Ambala police have booked five people under charges of cheating for allegedly having sent a man to Azerbaijan instead of Italy.
The case has been registered at Mahesh Nagar police station, on the complaint of Pradeep Singh, a resident of Ambala Cantonment.
In his complaint, Pradeep stated, “The accused approached me and claimed that they sent people aboard and could send me to Italy for which they sought Rs 18 lakh in December 2022. I handed over my passport and other documents to them and in January last year I transferred Rs 9 lakh to initiate the process. In February I gave them Rs 5 lakh and they assured me that the process would be completed soon. Later, I got a call from the accused that my visa had arrived and they demanded more payment to get the tickets booked, following which I gave them Rs 4 lakh cash in March last year.”
The complainant further alleged: “As asked, I reached Delhi airport on April 19, but I was told that my flight would be on April 26, and I was given a visa to Azerbaijan instead of Italy. They told me that they would send me to Italy from there, but I stayed in Azerbaijan for over three months and then came back to India as they failed to send me to Italy”.
The complainant said that after he confronted the agents, they returned Rs 3 lakh but failed to return the remaining amount. They threatened him and his family of dire consequences if he sought the pending amount, he claimed.
