Farmers threaten to protest over unpaid compensation, FIRs on stubble burning
In a first for Rohtak district, a case has been registered against a farmer for burning crop residue. Silakram, a farmer from Dobh village, has been named in the complaint filed by Agriculture Supervisor Nidhi Payal at the Bahu Akbarpur police station.
Relief pending since 2022

In response, the local chapter of the All-India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) has called for the immediate withdrawal of all cases filed against farmers in Haryana for stubble burning. The farmers’ body argues that the government should focus on managing crop residue rather than blaming farmers for air pollution. Sumit Singh, state secretary of the AIKS, highlighted several unresolved issues facing farmers in the district. “Compensation for the damage caused to wheat crops in Rohtak district in 2022 is still pending, as is the crop-loss compensation for rabi-2023,” he stated. Singh also mentioned that farmers across nearly two dozen villages are awaiting relief payments totalling Rs 20 crore.
The kisan sabha has urged the state government to release the pending compensation and withdraw the cases against farmers, warning that failure to do so will result in a statewide protest.
