Farmers under the banner of the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) staged a protest at the gate of the Mini Secretariat here today.

There were reports of a minor scuffle between farmers and the police, as the protesters wanted to hand over a memorandum of their demands to Kurukshetra MP Naveen Jindal, Ambala MP Varun Chaudhary, Yamunanagar MLA Ghanshyam Dass Arora and Jagadhri MLA Akram Khan, who were holding a development coordination and monitoring committee meeting (Disha) at the Mini Secretariat.

According to information, the farmers were raising the issues of FIRs against farmers for stubble burning, ‘entry’ of farmers on MFMB portal and non-availability of DAP fertiliser.

The administration asked the farmers to decide on a seven-member delegation to meet the MPs and MLAs, but the meeting could not take place. The farmers did not wait and tried to breach the barricade when the police stopped them with mild force. They said if their demands were not accepted, they would hold a protest at the office of the Yamunanagar Deputy Commissioner on November 7.

Subhash Gurjar, district president of the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Tikait group), said they were being wrongly blamed for causing pollution. In place of taking concrete steps for the paddy residue management, the government was registering cases against farmers and blocking their entry in the procurement portal, he claimed.
