A delegation of the district unit of the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), a farmers’ organisation, on Monday submitted a memorandum to the authorities of the Irrigation Department regarding the demand of increasing the supply of irrigation water in various canals and channels in the district.

Mahender Singh Chauhan, a spokesperson of the morcha, said poor supply of water in various channels in some of the villages such as Bhanguri, Manpur, Hathin, Patali, Ghughera, Malai, Utawar , Rupraka and Bahin villages had resulted in problems for farmers as they were unable to start the sowing of the rabi crop due to lack of water in the fields. He said as the water in the channels was received from the main source of the Agra and Gurugram canals, the channels had been dry for the past several months. He said though water had been supplied in the Gurgaon canal, the channel of distribution was not getting adequate water.

The problem that had been persisting for many years has adversely affected the agriculture and production of crop in the region. He said the officials claimed that issues such as ongoing construction work related to concretisation of the base of the canals and channels had led to the problem. He said though the issue has been raised with the authorities, including the office of the DC and officials from the Irrigation Department in the past few months, the problem had not been unresolved till date. The delay in the cleaning work of the channels and canals had also been a major factor behind the short supply of the irrigation water.
