Don’t take mental health lightly: Expert
Nowadays, the problems of stress and depression have become quite common among people. There can be many reasons behind stress, such as work pressure, financial problems or relationship issues. Depression is a mental disorder due to which a person starts feeling sad, hopeless and worthless. It also has a bad effect on one’s daily life.
This was stated by Dr Sujata Sethi, a consultant psychiatrist at the Rohtak PGIMS. She was delivering a lecture on psychological well-being in daily life at the Postgraduate Institute of Dental Sciences on Monday.
Addressing students and doctors on the occasion, Sethi said the purpose behind observing Mental Health Week was to make people aware of its significance.
“Many people ignore depression and stress, considering them minor problems. But these can cause serious health problems and may even lead a number of people to suicide,” she said.
The psychiatrist said any case of mental disorder should not be taken lightly and one should immediately consult a doctor so that the problem can be detected and treated in time. The PGIMS Medical Superintendent, Dr Kundan Mittal, said stress and depression had become quite common among people. The experts underlined the importance of yoga, meditation, good sleep, balanced diet and exercise for the maintenance of mental health.
The PGIDS Principal, Dr Sanjay Tiwari, thanked Sethi and her team for organising the lecture by the department of psychiatry. “Many people feel that they are suffering from depression, but they do not mention it to their family and friends as even today, mental illness is considered a stigma, whereas we should immediately contact a good psychiatrist if we see the symptoms,” he stated.
Dr Manju Rana said being constantly sad, having frequent mood swings, abnormal behaviour, sudden anger and sudden laughter, nervousness or pain can be symptoms of mental illness.
Dr Vaishali gave a comprehensive presentation on the signs and symptoms of psychiatric stress and enriched the discussion with her perspective on stress management.
Dr Shikha Tiwari welcomed the participants by presenting saplings. The stage was conducted by Dr Adarsh, while Dr Bhavna proposed the vote of thanks.
