Amid allegations of a new-born baby being swapped at the Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College (KCGMC) in Karnal, the local police launched an investigation. DNA samples have been collected from the deceased baby girl, whose body is currently in the hospital mortuary, as well as from the parents who claim their baby boy was swapped for a girl. The police said the samples would be sent to forensic labs in Madhuban for analysis.

The Civil Lines SHO, Inspector Vishnu Miter said, “A family from Gharaunda has alleged that their baby boy was exchanged with a girl. We have started the investigation and collected DNA samples for confirmation of parentage.”

Kuldeep, a resident of Gharaunda, claimed his wife, Mamta, gave birth to a premature baby boy on October 31. Due to the infant’s critical condition, the baby was first transferred to the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Gharaunda and then to KCGMC in Karnal for specialised care. Kuldeep alleged that on November 1, hospital staff handed them a baby girl instead of their son and he believes the baby was swapped while in the hospital.

The family refused to accept the baby girl, suspecting foul play and left her under the hospital’s care. Sadly, the girl passed away on November 2. The family has filed two complaints: one alleging that their baby boy went missing or was swapped and another requesting DNA testing to confirm the parentage of the deceased baby girl.

In response, the family and local residents approached the Superintendent of Police (SP) Ganga Ram Punia, urging a thorough investigation. The SP directed that DNA tests be conducted on the parents and the deceased baby to resolve the issue.

Dr MK Garg, Director of KCGMC, confirmed the DNA tests and expressed confidence that the results would bring clarity. He denied any allegations of foul play, stating, “The DNA test will clarify any confusion. Hospital records indicate that the child was admitted as a female.” The DNA analysis is expected to confirm the true parentage and clear up the confusion surrounding the alleged baby swap.
