The civic infrastructure and sewerage system in the city are likely to get a major boost with a grant of Rs 450 crore expected to be sanctioned and released from the Union Government to the Faridabad Metropolitan Development Authority (FMDA) soon. Sources said funds would be used to upgrade and maintain the network of sewage disposal and treatment facilities in the city.

While the FMDA has already taken over operation of all major sewage lines (600-mm or above diameter lines) in the city, it has also taken over two of the sewage treatment plants (STPs) of the total capacity of 60 MLD from the Faridabad Municipal Corporation (MCF) and the Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran. With only one functional 15 MLD STP located at Badshahpur village at present, another 45 MLD plant is expected to be operational next month after the completion of the repairs and renovation work, according to sources in the civic administration.

The FMDA has also been engaged in the work on setting up another STP of 45 MLD at the same place, which is scheduled to be functional within a year.

“The money to be sanctioned through the Namami Gange project of the Union Government will be used in the upgrade and renovation of the sewage treatment facilities and the cleaning and strengthening the disposal network of the main sewer lines in the city,” an FMDA official said. He said the master sewer, which is 95 km long, is undergoing a cleaning process.

The FMDA, which had taken up the cleaning of the major sewage lines for the first time in March this year, was able to complete the work of 16 km so far. The drive that remained stuck for over two months in the wake of the monsoon had now resumed, it was claimed. The Rs 30-crore project is likely to be over by July next year.

It may be recalled that around one-third of the total length of 640-km of the sewage network has been taken over by the FMDA from the MCF already. The work involves the cleaning of the main lines connected to the STPs here. The FMDA is also due to take over the upkeep of the two STPs of the total capacity of 180 MLD located at Pratapgarh and Mirzapur villages soon. These have been upgraded by the MCF at a cost of about Rs 240 crore. However, the transfer will take place after these get fully functional, an official said.

Vishal Bansal, Chief Engineer, FMDA (sewage and water supply), said the agency was taking up various measures or projects to upgrade and improve the civic disposal and treatment facilities in the city.
