Ambala, September 2

Despite regular challaning and awareness campaigns being run, the heavy-duty vehicle drivers continue to flout lane-driving traffic rules on the National Highway-44.

Many drivers of heavy vehicles can be spotted changing their lanes frequently and driving recklessly instead of following lane driving.

Nearly 35,500 challans have been issued by the Ambala police since April 2022.

The things get difficult for drivers of light vehicle during the late hours, as the drivers of heavy vehicle, including the roadways drivers, use all three lanes of the highway and continue to change their lanes swiftly.

An Ambala police spokesman said 22 challans were issued to the drivers of heavy vehicle on Monday for violating the left-lane driving rule. To ensure road safety, and strict compliance of the lane driving the campaign is being run for the last 779 days and so far 35,498 challans have been issued to the drivers of the heavy duty vehicle.

An official said the drivers of the heavy vehicle often change their lanes to overtake and such driving leads to accidents. They also keep driving in the rightmost lane which is meant for overtaking. To ensure road safety, and reduce the number of accidents, efforts are being made for strict compliance of traffic norms. The DSP, traffic, and the Traffic SHOs have been directed to ensure strict compliance of the speed limit and lane driving, so that the other commuters don’t face inconvenience on the highway.

Ambala SP Surinder Singh Bhoria said, “The drivers who rashly drive the heavy vehicles, change lanes and overtake wrongly on the National Highway are being penalized and cases are also being registered against them. The situation is improving gradually as we are also running awareness drives, too. Efforts are being made further to improve the situation.”
