As per the data shared by the Kurukshetra police, last year, various teams of the police recovered over 84 kg of opium, over 1,982 kg of poppy husk, 658 gm of heroin, 43 kg of ganja, 551 gm of smack, seven bottles of syrup and 3,762 intoxicating tablets.

According to the police, heroin in the district is coming from Delhi and opium is being supplied from Jharkhand and Manipur. Intoxicating tablets and syrups are getting leaked from distributors and retailers.

Last year, properties worth around Rs 14 crore belonging to nine peddlers were attached, illegal constructions of projects belonging to 10 peddlers were demolished and for the first time, three persons involved in drug trafficking were sent to jail for one year under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PITNDPS) Act.

An official said, “To avoid getting caught, drug peddlers are using other vehicles to pilot their vehicle and create a safe passage. They are using personal vehicles and making women their co-passenger. But, our teams are keeping a close watch on the illegal smuggling and as a result, an increase has been registered in the arrests.”

Superintendent of Police (SP) Surinder Singh Bhoria said, “The Kurukshetra police had made some good recoveries last year and suppliers from Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Manipur and Delhi were arrested. To break the nexus and the supply chain, we are focusing on arresting the main suppliers. There is a clear direction to the officers to develop every single input and catch every person involved in the smuggling of drugs.”

“Our teams are also holding awareness campaigns to encourage people to shun drugs and appealing them to share information if they come to know about people involved in the trafficking. Sports activities are being organised,” the SP added.
