AI (artificial intelligence) technologies contribute heavily to sustainable dairy farming by optimising resource management.
This was stated by the ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) Director, Dr Dheer Singh, while addressing a workshop on the application of AI and machine learning in the dairy and food industry organised by the Dairy Technology Division of ICAR-NDRI on Wednesday.
He said AI-driven systems could create ideal conditions for providing maximum comfort to dairy animals by monitoring environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, and ventilation during periods of stress.
The dairy and animal husbandry sectors contributed 4.5 per cent to India’s GDP, with the dairy sector contributing 24 per cent to the agricultural sector, valued at around Rs 10 lakh crore, the highest in the world, he added.
Dr Singh emphasised the need for students to be introduced to AI and to encourage students to develop skills to pursue entrepreneurship.
The purpose of AI and machine learning was to make jobs easier and to supplement the current production system, he added.
Tetra Pak India Former MD Ashutosh Manohar talked about the different functions that could be carried out by AI, including supply management, quality control, production planning and management.
IIIT-Delhi Professor Ganesh Bagler talked about computer algorithms involved in AI.
He also spoke about the involvement of AI in the tea, coffee and chocolate industries and about the integration of the technology of 3D printing in the dairy industry.
Talking about the role of AI in dairy farm management and milk production, IIT-Delhi Associate Professor Kavya Dashora emphasised the importance of data curation and its management for machine learning.
She detailed various aspects of AI, including the types of data in machine learning, big data and its composition, tech enablers in dairy food systems, smart packaging, analytical models in machine learning, data visualisation, industry 4.0, applicability of AI in panchgavya, shelf life prediction of food products.
