The Constitution Day was celebrated in Karnal and Kaithal districts on Tuesday. Assembly Speaker Harvinder Kalyan chaired the function organised at Dr Mangal Sen Auditorium in Karnal and Panchayat Minister Krishan Lal Panwar was the chief guest at the event organised at the RKSD College in Kaithal.

Addressing the gathering, Speaker Kalyan emphasised that the Constitution was not merely a book but a scripture guiding the nation. He described it as the “supreme law,” under which all other laws were framed. He highlighted its origin as a document created by and for the people of India. “The three pillars of democracy — Legislature, Judiciary, and Executive — along with constitutional institutions, operate within the framework of the Constitution,” he said.

Kalyan elaborated the process of drafting the Constitution, which involved extensive deliberations by the Constituent Assembly from December 9, 1946, to November 26, 1949. Over 165 meetings were held during this period, with a dedicated drafting committee refining the text over 114 days.

“On this day in 1949, many articles of the Constitution came into effect, while the complete document was implemented on January 26, 1950,” Kalyan said. He stressed the Constitution's role in uniting the nation, providing justice, and upholding equality. He urged everyone to honour their fundamental duties along their rights.

Karnal MLA Jagmohan Anand, Assandh MLA Yoginder Rana, former Mayor Renu Bala Gupta, BJP district working president Brij Gupta, Deputy Commissioner Uttam Singh, Superintendent of Police Ganga Ram Punia and other guests were also present.

While addressing the gathering in Kaithal, Panwar said that the Constitution, adopted 75 years ago, not only granted fundamental rights but also reminded citizens of their duties.

“While the Constitution gives us the feeling of being free citizens of a free nation, it also binds us with responsibilities through fundamental duties,” Panwar said.
