Congress' Mamman Khan’s pledge to protect Mewat sparks controversy amid Haryana election
Congress leader and Ferozepur Jhirka candidate Mamman Khan has vowed to drive out those who wronged Mewat’s Meo community during the 2023 Nuh riots if the Congress forms government in the state. Khan’s statement at a public meeting has given the ongoing campaign a communal tone.
Khan alleged that Meos were targeted, families ruined, and innocent residents harassed. He claimed cow vigilantism led to his own harassment and framing. “I know every person who targeted us; I gave lists to police. Once the Congress forms government, we won’t spare them, and they'll have to leave Mewat,” Khan said in a viral video.
However, BJP’s Nuh candidate and former minister Sanjay Singh countered that Khan’s statement threatens Hindus, who are in the minority in the district. “Khan is timid; I dare him to speak rudely to us, and we’ll teach him a lesson. This is what will happen if the Congress comes to power – they’ll target minority Hindus, SC, ST, and OBC, and terror will return to Mewat,” Singh said.
The controversy has sparked a YouTube war between cow vigilantes and Meo influencers, the ‘Mamman Army’. Cow vigilantes warn that if the Congress returns to power, Mewati Hindus will face the fate of Kashmiri Pandits and demand action against Khan for threatening minorities.
