Former Congress leaders Nirmal Singh and Himmat Singh, who had revolted against the party in the last Assembly elections and later announced to form a new political front, have named it “Haryana Democratic Front”.

Both leaders have been approaching dissatisfied leaders of other parties, especially the Congress.

Speaking to The Tribune, Himmat Singh said, “We have held meetings in Yamunanagar, Ambala and Kurukshetra. Leaders from Karnal and Kaithal have also approached us. Though leaders from Faridabad have also approached us, we have decided to keep our focus on the districts of north Haryana initially. We will project our new political front as an alternative. The front will make people aware and provide them leadership.”

“Leaders from the Congress, INLD, Shiromani Akali Dal and BSP are in touch. We will hold a big ‘aashirwad’ rally at the new grain market in Ambala City on March 15. The block presidents will be selected soon and then, the names of district chiefs and other office-bearers will be announced. The flag of the front will be revealed in the rally,” he added.

Himmat said, “The BJP has forgotten its promises and the government departments are being handed over to private players. Under the banner of Haryana Democratic Front, we will raise public issues and struggle for the rights of the public. We will launch a membership drive after March.” Nirmal Singh said that the process to register the front is almost over.

“We had decided to form a new political front and raise public issues. We will introduce our candidates in all elections, including the elections of the Municipal Corporation, municipal council and zila parishad. The candidates will be selected on the basis of popularity and their hold in the area. The people of Ambala have shown confidence in me and I will never break their trust,” he said.

Nirmal Singh and his daughter Chitra Sarwara, who was the former All-India Mahila Congress general secretary, had contested as Independent from Ambala City and Ambala Cantonment, respectively as Chitra was denied ticket from Ambala Cantonment. Himmat, who was seeking Congress ticket from Ambala City, was also denied ticket.
