A two-day international conference on “Security, climate change and sustainable development in Indo-Pacific region’ organised by the International Centre for Indo-Pacific Studies of Kurukshetra University, in collaboration with the Indo-Pacific Division of the Ministry of External Affairs started on Monday.

To promote inter-country research

  • The chief patron of this conference, KUK Vice-Chancellor Prof Som Nath Sachdeva, said Kurukshetra University’s international centre for Indo-Pacific studies was now going to undertake a research project on sustainable development.
  • Prof Sachdeva added that this centre aimed at promoting interdisciplinary, inter-country research and academic collaboration on all aspects of Indo-pacific region.
  • Conference director Prof VN Attri elucidated on the theme and objectives of the conference.

The chief guest of the inaugural session, the Vice-Admiral, AVSM, VSM, Deputy Chief, Naval Staff, Indian Navy, Tarun Sobti, highlighted the maritime significance of Indo- Pacific region and emphasised on the security dynamics and need of collective action for safer collective future.

The Vice-Admiral further said the Indo-pacific region shapes world’s economy and politics. Prof Anil Sooklal High Commission of South Africa to India, Hide Sakaguchi, president, OPRI, Sasakawa Peace Foundation Tokyo Japan, Dr Nomvuyo N Nokwe, former High Commission of South Africa to Republic of Mauritius, Dr Kgame Molope, vice- chairman, IORAG, South Africa Chapter, South Africa, Sanjeev K Sobhee, vice-chancellor, University of Mauritius, Reduit, Republic of Mauritius, Sanjay Panda, former Ambassador to Turkey, Admiral RK Dhowan (retd) former chief, naval staff, Prof Francesco De Paulo, University of Naples, Dr Emadul Islam, SRF, OPRI, Sasakawa Peace Foundation, Tokyo Japan, Firdaus Dahlan, Republic of Indonesia, and Ambassador JK Tripathi (retd) were the guests of honour in the inaugural session.

A book of abstracts of this third international conference along with a book written by Prof VN Attri, Recommendation of second international conference 2023, three recent policy briefs on climate change, sustainable development and blue economy were released.

During the session, registrar, KUK, Prof Sanjeev Sharma, dean academic affairs Prof Dinesh Kumar and deans, directors, chairpersons, along with other higher administrative officials, teaching faculty, research scholars and students were present.
