Haryana Women Commission Chairperson Renu Bhatia inspected the district jail in Sirsa on Tuesday, assessing the condition of women inmates and discussed their situation with jail officials.

During her visit, she reviewed the facilities provided to the women and closely examined the cleanliness and living conditions in the jail.

Bhatia noted that there were 48 to 50 women prisoners in the jail, many of whom were incarcerated for drug-related offences. She expressed concern over this and emphasised the commission’s efforts to rehabilitate these women. Plans were afoot to provide skill-based training to help them reintegrate them into society after their release and prevent them from returning to crime. Discussions with the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police had already taken place to begin this initiative soon, she said.

The chairperson also praised the jail administration’s efforts to rehabilitate prisoners through activities like sports, cooking and packaging. She acknowledged that many women inmates lacked family support after their release, forcing them back into the world of crime.
