The Gurugram police have registered a case against officials of Meta Platforms, Inc, the company which owns social media platform WhatsApp, for not providing information sought by them under the recently enacted new laws.

A police spokesperson has stated that during the investigation of a sensitive case, the Gurugram police, after obtaining desired permission from the competent authority, Home Department, Haryana Government, to obtain necessary information in a legally valid manner, sent a notice to the authorities concerned of the WhatsApp social media platform on July 17 through email and sought information.

However, the authorities did not provide the required information, he added.

Thereafter, on July 25, the required information for some specified mobile numbers was again sought by sending complete details, but WhatsApp did not provide any information to the police.

Despite various valid requests till August 23, WhatsApp did not provide the required information to the police.

The police have registered a case against the directors and nodal officers of WhatsApp under Sections 223 (A), 241, 249 (C) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and relevant sections of the Information Technology Act at Police Station Cyber Crime (East), Gurugram.
