The chairman of the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana, Dr Vijender Singh Ahlawat, has extended his support to the agitation of the Rohtak lawyers, which has been going on for the past 22 days.

Ahlawat visited the dharna site in Rohtak today, where District Bar Association general secretary Deepak Hooda briefed him about the situation.

“The Bar Council chairman discussed the matter with the local lawyers and then talked to the Additional Director-General of Police (CID), who assured him of help and support,” said Hooda.

Ahlawat asserted that if the lawyers failed to get justice from the police, they would seek enquiry from some other agency. He invited the agitating lawyers to the Bar council, stating that he would accompany their delegation to the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court to get the matter resolved.

The Rohtak lawyers have been keeping their work suspended since September 2 against the registration of an FIR against a local advocate. A meeting of the representatives of the Bar Associations of different districts in the state was also held on Saturday.

At the meeting it was proposed to rope in the Bar associations of Punjab, Chandigarh, and the Punjab and Haryana High Court in the agitation.

Ahlawat had earlier written to the Haryana Director-General of Police (DGP) as well as the ADGP (Rohtak range), requesting for a thorough and fair investigation. However, the lawyers are demanding that the name of the lawyer be removed from the FIR. The local police authorities are not willing to do so, due to which the issue remains unresolved.

Nevertheless, thousands of litigants have been suffering due to the ongoing tussle between the lawyers and the police authorities.
