At Karnal Kisan Mela, farmers get seeds of advanced wheat varieties
Farmers from various districts of Haryana on Tuesday reached the ICAR-Indian Institute of Wheat and Barley Research (IIWBR), Karnal, to get seeds of wheat and barley on the fourth day of ‘Kisan Mela and Seed Day’ at the institute. Farmers are being invited to the institute daily by scientists, where they are provided advanced seeds and latest agricultural knowledge.
Dr Om Prakash Ahlawat, officiating Director of IIWBR, mentioned wheat seeds of varieties DBW 187, DBW 222, DBW 303, DBW 327, DBW 332, DBW 370, DBW 371, DBW 372, and DBW 316, along with barley seeds of variety DWRB 137, were distributed to registered farmers from Haryana, who had signed up on the IIWBR seed portal.
The chief guest at the event, Dr Joginder Singh Malik, Director of Maharana Pratap Horticultural University, Karnal, encouraged farmers to take full advantage of such fairs and urged them to follow the tips given by scientists. During the technical sessions, Dr Anil Khippal discussed the techniques for increasing wheat and barley yields and advocated for the adoption of natural farming practices. Dr Prem Lal explained in detail the diseases affecting wheat and barley, as well as their prevention methods. Principal Scientist Dr Neeraj Kulshreshtha provided insights into wheat varieties suitable for cultivation in saline soils, while Prof Kamini Kumari emphasised on soil health and the components of natural farming. Young scientist Dr Neeraj Kumar shared key tips for crop residue management.
