40% procured paddy lifted from Yamunanagar
Farmers in the district are facing significant delays as only 40 percent of the paddy procured has been lifted from local grain markets. Despite the procurement of 181,947 MT of paddy by government agencies across 13 grain markets up until October 14, only 73,100 MT (around 40 percent) has been lifted, leaving 108,847 MT still lying in the markets.
Shiv Kumar Sandhala, district chairman of the Haryana Aanaj Mandi Arthiya Association, expressed concern over the slow pace of lifting, which has been causing multiple problems for farmers. “Farmers are facing losses due to the slow lifting of paddy. They are unable to unload their produce on time, leading to long waiting periods. Moreover, payment is only made after the paddy is lifted from the market, adding to their financial strain,” Sandhala stated.
Farmers echoed these concerns, citing the overcrowded conditions in grain markets. Satpal Tyagi, a farmer from Jagadhri, said, “I faced a lot of trouble unloading my paddy because there’s no space in the market. Heaps of paddy and filled bags are everywhere.”
However, Jitesh Goyal, District Food Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Controller of Yamunanagar, said procurement and lifting operations were running smoothly. Steps were being taken to accelerate the process. “So far, 73,100 MT of paddy has been lifted, and we are expediting the process. Officials have been instructed to start work early in the morning and continue late into the night to ensure that paddy is lifted as quickly as possible,” Goyal said.
