2 cops booked for taking bribe, Rs 19 lakh seized

The local office of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) last night arrested a sub-inspector posted in the cyber cell of the district police in connection with taking a bribe of Rs 12.5 lakh from an accused wanted in a cybercrime incident.

The bureau has registered a case under various Sections against two police officials, of whom one is absconding. A total of around Rs 19.97 lakh has been recovered by the ACB from the accused so far.

Sources in the department revealed that the arrest was made after a team of the ACB conducted a raid in response to a complaint last night and caught one of the accused identified as SI Arjun while taking a bribe of Rs 12.5 lakh from the complainant.

The ACB recovered another amount of Rs 7.47 lakh kept in his vehicle. When the team, which came to know about the involvement of another SI identified as Ram Chander, reached sector-15 market to nab him, the latter managed to give them a slip, it is reported.

The accused policemen had demanded the bribe for helping the accused in resolution of the case in their favour and extension of their bail according to the complainant who had contacted the ACB after the demand of Rs 12.5 lakh was made recently. The ACB, which laid the trap, managed to arrest one SI, who had come to take the money from the accused as per the plan.

Jaiveer Rathi SP, ACB, said that while one of the accused cops has been caught red-handed, the ACB has launched a hunt to arrest the other who is absconding. He said a case under various Sections, including Prevention of Corruption Act, has been registered in this connection.
